No, not really...! :/ :) Ehm, I think most people tend to do use it as an "excuse" for a family get-together. There's national day celebrations in parks too with choirs, folk music/dansers and singers and stuff... :) (never been to one!) Probably parades too, definately in Stockholm (the capital).
I think for most it's sign that summer has arrived so bbq and picnics are popular.
The celebration is to commemorate that in 1523 Gustav Vasa was elected King of Sweden, marking the end of the Kalmar Union. But only started to be celebrated in 1916...! :)
I think it's just tooo long ago for people to feel connected to the occasion. It's not present in our social consciousness...like in other countries with a more recent an violent claim to independence.
The National Day has due to our 'lack of interest' been 'taken over' (or more like handed to) the extreme right who have tarnished our right to feel proud of our nation and nationality...we're starting to take it back again, more and more people want to celebrate but...the lack of traditions make it a bit tough...
We stayed home all day yesterday, had take away for dinner and went for a walk...! ;) I too hope to make more of a 'thing' about it in the future but...yeah...its on my to-do-list. :)
